Embalming Nature Series

EMBALMING NATURE SERIES

The image sources for the pieces in the Embalming Nature series come from nature detritus that has been sheared from its source. For centuries we have attributed poetic expression to nature; it sings, cries out, whispers of a divine voice. We are also capable of destroying, depleting and ignoring nature’s import. Using a work process that evokes embalming, the singing and poetry is silenced. The plant bits are painted and drawn, and then layer-by-layer, the specificity that originally defined each piece is obscured or symbolically embalmed. In this reflective state, the bits of nature that have been discarded become refueled, through painting, with presence and breath.

Food, Shelter & Technicolor Threads Series

FOOD, SHELTER & TECHNICOLOR THREADS SERIES

In these works, iconic images of thread and yarn are ripped from their social fabric, and meaning is shaken off. Clothing we put on our bodies usually signifies far more than the function of keeping warm or covering body parts. For the wearer, issues such as control, self-image, rebellion, fear, expression and desire may be present. The context creates further shifts in the meaning (i.e. wedding dress worn by a gas station attendant). The paintings in this series consider culturally established signs by using images of thread and yarn taken from clothing, then presenting them in a state of quarantine, unencumbered by the tyranny of fashion.
